DAY 1: Leave your bandage on for a minimum of two hours. You want the tattoo to remain moist and protected for as long as possible. Carefully remove the bandage and gently wash the area with your fingertips with a mild, fragrance free soap and pat dry. Leaving the bandage on overnight prevents the new tattoo from sticking to your pajamas or sheets for the first night. Do not immerse your tattoo in water until it is completely healed. Showering is okay, just do not let the water beat down on your new tattoo. Please try to avoid baths and hot tubs.
DAY 2: Wash your hands! Always, before touching your tattoo, including removing the bandage, wash your hands with an antibacterial soap. Remove the bandage, slowly, in case it has stuck to the tattoo. Wash your tattoo with a mild soap and warm water. Your goal is to remove any blood, fluid, ink, or Vaseline that was left on the surface face of the skin. Pat it dry with clean towel, taking care never to rub it. You will not be applying a new bandage. As the skin of the new tattoo heals, you want to keep it moist to prevent scabbing. Wash your tattoo 3 to 5 times a day. Apply a thin layer of tattoo products (like Graffiti’s Tattoo Goo, Black Cat Healing Salve, etc. A and D Ointment can also be used, but use this only for 3 days). Do not smother the area, a little bit will go a long way. Here's the deal with antibiotic creams, (like Neosporin, Polysporin, Bacitracin, Bepanthen, etc.) Antibiotic creams do not necessarily promote healing. Avoid wearing tight, restrictive clothes over top of your tattoo.
DAY 3: Take your shower as normal, washing your tattoo gently. Wash your hands and apply your moisturizer as often as necessary to keep the tattoo from getting dry.
DAYS 4 to 14: Your tattoo will go through a couple of different phases. The colored and damaged places may simply peel, just like sunburn, becoming flaky and falling off. Never scratch or pick at the skin (or scab) of your new tattoo.
DAYS 15 to 21: In general, tattoos will be completely healed somewhere between two and three weeks. Keep your tattoo out of the sun during its healing process and use SPF 30 or higher on your tattoo after it is healed. Exposure to the sunlight will fade and damage your tattoo's appearance. |
